McDermott Family Reunion 1983 - Jackson, Michigan
Ian McDermott
Really can't imagine how different my life would have turned out if I never had Uncle John as an example of what an adult life could be. Like kids that grow up in families with wealth or celebrity, allowing them to think that those things are possible to achieve for themselves too - I got to see a life of principled and and practiced compassion. Anyone who got to witness John's life had their scope of human capacity expanded. The world is unquestionably worse without him now, but has benefitted so much because of the time we did have him. For a Skinny™️, quiet, modest man, Uncle John's life was huge. I will be forever grateful for him and for the family and friends who helped allow John to be himself, especially Cilla who no doubt made his life whole and brought him to share so much more of his personal life with us.

John's nieces Kate McDermott and Hayley Sauer asked me to post this.

My cousin Kate and I (Hayley) wanted to share some memories of our Uncle John and Aunt Cilla. When Kate and I were little, Uncle John and Aunt Cilla took us to a playground near my beach house and we had a blast! Then, on my 5th birthday, I got a new game called Chutes and Ladders. Uncle John and Aunt Cilla wanted to play with me and Kate. So we played on my mom’s bed. We had a great time.

On another birthday, Kate and I were watching the TV show The Office in my room. A little while later Uncle John and Aunt Cilla came in and started watching with us. Before I knew it they were laughing hysterically at the show. It was so fun. A final memory we would like to share is that about a month ago we were playing with Jack and Will in my building’s play room. Uncle John and Aunt Cilla came in and we all were joking around and having fun. This is how we will remember our Uncle John - as someone who was always laughing and having fun playing with us.
