Yes this is the Jeffree photo we remember, in article by mural photographer and archivist Tim Drescher in Common Sense, July-August 1976. The 320ft mural–"Our History Is No Mystery"–designed, painted & coordinated by Haight Ashbury Muralists Miranda Bergman
, Arch Williams, Jane Norling, Vicky Hamlin, Peggy Tucker, Thomas Kunz at John Adams Community College at corner Hayes & Masonic is a well-researched history of SF covering events not documented well in textbooks. I painted this section, assigning friend and beloved Jeffree to lead Longshore Strike 1934, accompanied by Paul Robeson, Gail Dolgin. Robeson died Jan. 1976 during the time we were painting. Muralists often use people they know as models for artwork and Free was at the front of my mind. Even tho I love the dynamic portrait of J, I began to find it cringeworthy that we have him leading Paul Robeson and not the other way around. As we all comment on Jeffree's close place in our lives, we recognize the guide he's long been, broadcasting straight out of his giant heart & brain to each of us.

"Our History is No Mystery" was a wonderful collaboration with you Jane. "cringeworthy" is a cool descriptive word, and food for thought and action. Beautiful realistic portaits of Gail, Jeffrey and Paul Robeson. There is a short film "People's Wall" made about the making of this mural.
