Dashae Is Born -- Truly a Gift
Dashae wasn't supposed to be her name. I called her Kiana years before I found out I was finally pregnant. Up until the moment she was born, that was going to be her name. Then laying there after delivering her at 26.5 weeks, I blurted out Dashae when the nurse asked me her name. I had never thought about the name before and didn't even know why I said it, but I felt that's who she was. As she grew up, I would always tell her "You're my gift from God" and would explain how I prayed for her because I struggled to get pregnant and that when others said I couldn't, I refused to accept anything less than the promise that I would have the child I desired.
When she was 6, we were living in Cambridge for a year. I had taken her and her cousin to a bookstore, and for some reason we started looking at baby name books. As we flipped through the pages, we came across the name Dasha. To our amazement and delight, it was Russian name meaning "gift from God."
