Louis and Celia Ritoff Nemser emigrated from Rezekne, Latvia, and settled in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn. They had seven sons (Joseph, William, Benjamin, Abraham, Jacob, Philip and Hyman) and one sister (Victoria). Their children were devoted to them and to each other. In the picture below, the grouchy boy in front of his mother is Hyman.

I love seeing the pictures of dad with famous people and personal heroes who addressed or attended various conventions and election rallies. Here he is with President Lyndon Johnson and Lady Bird.

He greatly enjoyed being with his grandsons. They made him laugh and they loved to play with him, although we did not see him often enough.

The love of his life was his wife, Beatrice Glass. She died in 1966. He was devoted to her--through health crises and life challenges.

He was a partisan Democrat. He disliked what he considered to be reactionary activities and beliefs of anti-union people.

I miss having him around, as a good listener and advisor. He was a very private person, rarely sharing or discussing personal problems, even with his daughter.

Hyman Nemser was a voracious reader. When he had the time, he read several books a week, mostly history and other non=fiction.
