Today I am thinking of all the places dad took us on Saturday errands. Nassau McGowan (hardware store), Weasy's (plant nursery), The Bagel Store and Tabatchnik's (appetizing store) were next to each other, the German deli for cold cuts. Somehow he made all of this really FUN for little kids.

I really miss his voice. His signature catch-phrases. His "Hi! Is anybody home" whistle. Calling us "lovey" or "darling" (dahling). Seeing his face!

The Rhodes 19 moored at Steppingstone Park in Kings Point. Sailing under the Throgs Neck Bridge and around the lighthouse. Once or twice continuing much further, under the Whitestone Bridge out to City Island in the Bronx for steamers. Sailing home, the beautiful sunset as we looked back west over the city. Coming about, Hard a-lee (for years I heard it as Heart O'Lee). Two shorts and a long to call the tender.

In 1959, when Abbey and Gloria moved into 5 Parkside Drive, in Great Neck, N.Y., and their neighbors Miriam and Gene Halpert happened by (strolling down from 2 Parkside Drive) they became lifelong best friends. Now, in 2016, the Halperts still live in their same house, still 100% best friends with Gloria, emailing or speaking by phone at least once a day!

Abbey's best friend-- for sure!-- was Gloria. He called her "buddy," "buddyboy," "lovey" (pre-dating Thurston Howell III, even). There were no boys' nights out or golfing vacations. Just time together almost always, when he wasn't at work.

Ahhhh, alas Abbey died too young for this phenomenon, and it would have entirely confounded him! Many a family photo was taken...with the lens cap still on!

No doubt: being married to Gloria! After that: before he had to quit, Marlboro Reds. And throughout his life, FOOD: luxurious hotel breakfast buffets, hearty Southern Italian meals.

In the old days, smoke cigarettes! In all days, eat delicious food. Go to work. Play tennis. Sail our Rhodes 19', Dayzees. Sit in the back yard. Drink a cup of steaming hot black coffee on the beach. Garden.
