What will you miss most about Abner?

Today I am thinking of all the places dad took us on Saturday errands. Nassau McGowan (hardware store), Weasy's (plant nursery), The Bagel Store and Tabatchnik's (appetizing store) were next to each other, the German deli for cold cuts. Somehow he made all of this really FUN for little kids.

I really miss his voice. His signature catch-phrases. His "Hi! Is anybody home" whistle. Calling us "lovey" or "darling" (dahling). Seeing his face!

The Rhodes 19 moored at Steppingstone Park in Kings Point. Sailing under the Throgs Neck Bridge and around the lighthouse. Once or twice continuing much further, under the Whitestone Bridge out to City Island in the Bronx for steamers. Sailing home, the beautiful sunset as we looked back west over the city. Coming about, Hard a-lee (for years I heard it as Heart O'Lee). Two shorts and a long to call the tender.
