Dear Deanna,

I am the aunt of Alessa, one of Alex's classmates. Alessa and Alex roomed next to one another in the same dorm. Our hearts go out to you. Two and a half years ago, Alessa's mother -- my beloved sister -- disappeared one night and did not return home. For five days we mobilized a massive search involving police, FBI, the news media and many dedicated volunteers, similar to the search organized for your Alex. Our search, like yours, ended with tragic news. Our family knows something of your pain. We know the road to recovery is long, and there will always be a hole in your heart, missing your vibrant, beautiful, brave child. I pray that you will find solace in friends and family during this painful time. My advice to you -- one that I wish I had learned earlier -- is to accept help for the small and large things needing doing that may otherwise get in the way of your grieving. When someone asks what they can do, think about what they are good at. Allow them to do that something that aligns with their talents and makes your life a little bit easier. Find a mental health professional who specializes in trauma and bereavement. Never doubt that Alex was loved, and that she loved you. And if you ever would like to talk with someone who has walked some of the same thorny road, please do not hesitate to contact me at coketanya@gmail.com; 973 449-0026.

With our deep condolences
