Did Bill Ever Mention to You That He Was Greek? On a Scale of 1-10, How Proud Was He of His Heritage?
Not only did he mention it, his Greek heritage was inseperable from who he was. He was also the Don Rickles of our neighborhood, with a near constant stream of remarks about how the Greeks, being the founders of all art, learning and civilization, were superior to all others. Of course he was gentler than Don Rickles - his foils were twelve year old kids after all. But looking back on it and him, and I do with surprising regularity, I've come to realize that he was the master of the right-handed insult, the perfect opposite of the left-handed complement. He made fun of that which you were rightly proud of and he did it a way that made you realize that he was acknowledging that the source of your pride was justfied. It was a special skill and he was a special man.
