LifeStory

Annette Weinreb

Annette Weinreb, Aunt Annette to many, was a vibrant, good-hearted, one-of-a-kind person. She was the faithful, devoted and proud wife of Maury and mother of Risa. She had a vocabulary that would not have been out of place in a '40's noir film or '30's screwball comedy. She was the most consistent sender of greeting cards there ever was, and loved receiving them even more. We love you and will miss you.

The early years:

Annette, about 7 or 8; Abbey, about 4 or 5; Shelley, about 1 or 2 ~1928 or '29

Here are two missives from Aunt Annette to Barbara Z. Schwartz, with some Annette-lingo and the original emoticon, the 3 hearts next to her name...

The adored mode of communication: Postcards! To 2 Classic Weinreb addresses: Crackerjack, in Fire Island, and the beloved Riverdale apartment.

Annette's Dance Recital Programmes: May 2, 1926, and the next June, 1927. At the Booth Theater in the heart of the Theater District. Amazing historical memorabilia that she sent to Barbara Z. Schwartz in 2007, with complete explanation.

Brian Zalaznick So glad I got to reconnect with the indomitable spirit of Annette in Sonoma riding her tractor at 90+ with Risa and Peter. She was special. Proud to be a Zalaznick.

Photo (mid-1940s) of Annette, Abbey, and Shelley with their parents, Sam and Esther.

Typical of Annette, she labeled many photos with dates and names. This one is identified as "Mid-August 1943."
Lauren Zalaznick
Yes, so that makes sense about my story that I recalled, that this had to do with Abbey shipping out as a navy recruit at 19 (he was born in '24) and the five of them being together for one of the only times in their lives that either Esther or Sam was not tending the store. The tragedy was that it was Sam who they would never see again-- he was murdered about 6 months later, I believe.
