After Jimmy graduated from the Naval Academy, the two were married in Plains on July 7, 1946. They were engaged in February 1946, but Rosalynn kept their engagement secret -- she didn't want her mother to know that she was choosing marriage over continuing her education at Georgia State College for Women. -
Their Family Begins to Grow!

Jimmy and Rosalynn's first child, John William "Jack" Carter, was born in 1947 at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was soon followed by James Earl "Chip" Carter III, born in 1950, and Donnel Jeffrey "Jeff" Carter, born in 1952. Their last child was a baby girl named Amy Lynn Carter, born in 1967. She was the only child out of the the four to be born in Plains. -

Rosalynn Begins Focus on Mental Health Advocacy as First Lady

As First Lady of Georgia, Rosalynn Carter was appointed to the Governor's Commission to Improve Services for the Mentally and Emotionally Handicapped. She was also a honorary chairperson for the Georgia Special Olympics, and a regular volunteer at the Georgia Regional Hospital in Atlanta. -

Camp David Accords Signed

The Camp David Accords were signed after twelve days of secret talks moderated by Jimmy Carter between Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The bilateral treaty stemmed from over a year of diplomatic efforts between the U.S., Egypt, and Israel, and aimed to create peace between Egypt and Israel. As a result of the treaty, Begin and Sadat received the shared 1978 Nobel Peace Prize. -
The Carters Return to Georgia

After Carter's loss to Ronald Reagan in 1980, Jimmy and Rosalynn returned to their peanut farm in Georgia. The farm had been put into a blind trust to avoid any conflicts of interest, but the trustees recklessly mismanaged the farm. The Carters found themselves in over a million dollars of debt. They were able to overcome that debt by writing several projects; Jimmy wrote multiple novels, contributed to the massive growth of Habitat for Humanity, and taught at Emory University. -
Founding of The Carter Center

In 1982, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter founded the Carter Center, an organization that works to protect human rights, mediate international conflict, and eradicate dangerous diseases worldwide. In 2002, President Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work through the Carter Center. -
Rosalynn Continues Mental Health Advocacy

Rosalynn founded The Carter Center Mental Health Task Force, a group of experts and advocates that work to promote positive changes in the Mental Health field. She currently serves as the chair of the task force. She hosts the annual Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy, which brings national leaders in the mental health field together to work towards positive advances.
Carter is an Honorary Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a board member emeritus of the National Mental Health Association. She started the Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy in 1985, which lead to the eventual creation of the Mental Health Program in 1991.
She also created the Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism program, which provides funding for journalists report on mental health issues. The program aims to promote public awareness of mental health issues, and to eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness. -
Habitat for Humanity Carter Work Project Begins

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter begin the Carter Work Project, an week long housing initiative held every year in different locations in the United States. The first initiative took place in September 1984, when the Carters teamed up with dozens of volunteers to renovate a six-story apartment building in New York City. -
Peace Mission in North Korea
North Korea
In 1994, Bill Clinton covertly recruited Jimmy Carter to go on a peace mission to North Korea. North Korea was threatening to process nuclear fuel, which led the U.S. to prepare for potential war. Carter was able to negotiate an understanding with North Korean President Kim Il-sung, and further outlined a treaty. He then announced the treaty on CNN without the permission of the Clinton administration, as a means to push the U.S. into diplomatic action. -
Jimmy Carter Announces His Cancer Has Spread

On August 5, President Carter had gone through surgery to have a small mass on his liver removed. However, on August 12 it was announced that Carter had been diagnosed with cancer that had spread throughout his body. In December 2015, Carter announced that his cancer was gone.
Rosalynn commented in September 2015, "In spite of what's going on, it's been kind of wonderful just to know we have that kind of support, and also Jimmy's attitude is helping." In January 2016, Jimmy said of Rosalynn "Her support has helped me through the last 69 years since we’ve been married in everything I’ve ever tried. Of course, when I was ill and thought I might die at any time, she was there for me." -
Current Life In Plains, Georgia

The couple stills spends most of their time in their hometown, Plains, Georgia when they are not traveling or working for the Carter Center in Atlanta. Rosalynn continues to be an important mental health advocate, and they both are frequent volunteers for the non-for-profit company, Habitat for Humanity. They enjoy spending time with their ever growing family. In addition to their four children, they have eleven grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.
