LifeStory

Thomas Francis Feeney

By Karen Ritz

On January 16, 2017, Tom Feeney passed away peacefully at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Colorado.

Tom was born on December 26, 1961 in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School in Cape Cod and attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst.  His passions and hobbies mostly related to his love of the outdoors. Life in Cape Cod as a youth offered him a love of the sea and he learned to be a skilled boater. Living in beautiful Colorado over the past 16 years Tom enjoyed biking, skiing, lacrosse, hiking and boating with his children and many friends.

Tom lived life large and was full of passion. He was the life of the party, a sensitive and kind soul, an extreme sportsman, a hard-working go getter, vivacious, a prankster, lovingly and stubborn, tenacious, a loyal friend, a loving parent and a fighter. As a life long friend recently remarked "Tom was many things, but it was impossible not to love him"

He is survived by his father, William Feeney, his sisters, Lynne Sullivan, Karen Ritz and Kerry Hinton, and his amazing children, Sarah, 18, and Liam, 14, and his loving nieces and nephews, Matthew, Joel, Michaela, Alex and Brooke.

When that UMASS physics professor asked the unanswerable question, perplexing us both, our simultaneous question asked, a friendship was formed... We had no idea of the follies and misadventures that would follow. Cops in Mustangs in Nebraska, a wild night in Cheyenne, cab races in the Back Bay, the 'Comber, and all those turn free full speed ahead days on the mountains from coast to coast.

A life well lived Tom. You have been a great friend and a wonderful father. I will hold up my end here until we meet again.

I adored Tom Feeney. He was of course fun and passionate, but he was also SO kind and nice. And, a fellow UMASS Amherst alum to boot! Whenever I saw Tom, he treated me in such a welcoming way; he would just make you feel special. Whether it was skiing (yes, I still suck at it!), camping, beaching in Northern Cali., or just hanging out, I always enjoyed seeing and talking to Tom. He was a lovely soul (from a lovely family), and I am proud to have known him.

We met in California, many years ago. You made me laugh a lot. Work was much more fun when you and Dan were joking around, of course you were the instigator. I remember having fun whenever you were around. You made people feel good to be around you. Miss you...

I'll remember Tom's mischievous smile and his take-no-prisoners attitude. He was always up for anything and it was always fun hanging out with him. See you out on the water Tom.

I became friends with Tom as part of a “couples friends” wave that took place shortly after my wife and I moved to Colorado. I remember the first meeting well. The Prices and the Beckwiths met the Feeneys during a party one evening at the Cook’s place. There was chemistry all around and from then on it was rare for any of us to not be spending time with some or all, on a weekly basis. Some very happy times to be sure! Whenever we got together, we always managed to make it a fun, wild and crazy experience. Of course, Tom played a significant role in that! The countless sporting events watched, countless pool games played, and just the general enjoyment of hanging out with great friends will always be with me.

Tom was truly one of those who would give you the shirt off his back, if you needed it. I will miss that classic Boston accent; the way he ended every sentence with: “you know what I mean?” and the larger than life presence he had. He will be missed!
