    Martin Waldman Born

Little Martin Gordon Waldman was born at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn. He grew up in Brooklyn, where he was the local scrap metal collecting champion during the early days of Word War 2.

He went to James Madison High School and NYU, where completed a cutting edge major in Radio.

  • Marty and Sandy Meet at a Party!

Here's a 2015 video of mom and dad describing the first time they met. She was just 16, and he was a dashing college graduate. Hmmm. Here's a video of them telling the story.

  • A Mexican earthquake brings them together again

    Mexico
They had been on again off again for several years. Marty then reads a newspaper article about some Americans caught in a Mexican earthquake. One of them is Sandra NEMSER! He calls her up!

  • They Are Married

They are married at the Essex House in Manhattan. Here's a truly amazing video of the big day!
    Robert Waldman
My parents, Myron & Rosalie Waldman are seen at 4:56.
They brought home from the wedding a gift for me...one of the other guest's autograph. The guest was Walter Cronkite!
  • Baby Michael is born

Michael Alan Waldman is born at New York Hospital. They brought the baby back to their apartment at Peter Cooper Village in Manhattan.

  • Ma and Pa Go Into Business Together

They create a public relations and advertising firm called Communications Planners. Clients would include businesses, schools, unions and political campaigns, including Hubert Humphrey in 1968

  • An endless parade of birthday parties

I love this video which captures the spirit of these things and our parents total devotion to wonderful, loving birthday parties.
    Elizabeth Sams
The greatest birthday montage ever. What a tribute to the power of loving parents & sugar!
  • They move to the 'burbs

After years at Peter Cooper Village, Sandy, Marty, and little babies Mike and Steve, move to Great Neck, NY. In many ways it was an idyllic suburban upbringing -- great schools, a huge public pool with a high diving board, car pools, cub scouts, day camp etc. My favorite thing about the pool picture is that Michael is reading Making of the President and Steve is listening to the Yankee game on the radio.

    Cats, cats and more cats

They got Elsa from Deer Park Farm and she had a litter of kittens some time that year -- George, Puffy, Little Elsa and Round Ears. George, Puffy and Elsa stayed with us for many years (while Little Els and Round Ears were shipped off to other homes)

  • In addition to working with Dad, Mom serves as a cub scout den mother

They were involved in an endless series of civic activities -- school board, library board, PTA and, of course, cub scouts.
    By Steven Waldman
  • Some Bar Mitzvahs notable for their exquisite fashion statements

Michael's bar mitzvah was in 1973 and Steve's was in 1975. The highight of both was the checkered jacket and purple bow tie that Steve wore at Michael's bar mitzvah.
    Ned Berke
This is a remarkable jacket that I believe still sells well in certain North Brooklyn neighborhoods.
  • Ma and Pa found local drug treatment program

They were almost amazingly involved in civic life. One of their accomplishments was to co-found COPAY, a local drug treatment organization that's still around today.

  • Mom writes a Haggaddah

Sometime during our childhood, mom took it upon herself to write her own Haggadah for the family Passover meals. This became one of our family's greatest traditions. She skillfully weaved classic Passover stories with reflections on things going on in the world and in the lives of the family members. It usually included a few highly opinionated political digs too. Here is a sample from one year.
    Elizabeth Sams
Having married into another family of Hagaddah-adapters, I love this sample of your mother's work. What a gift to you all.
    Robert Waldman
The Waldman Family Hagaddah written by your mom gave such a personal meaning to the seders at your parents' house. I treasure my copy of one of them.
  • Michael graduates from high school

Ma and Pa were very proud of Michael's many accomplishments in high school, including his winning the Village Voice Punk Rock quiz.

  • Mom starts a new career

Bravely, ma went back to school, got a new masters degree and went to work at the Population Council, which does research related to women's health and reproduction around the globe.

  • Michael Marries Liz Fine

Mike marries his sweetheart from NYU law school. Ma and Pa are ecstatic.
    By Steven Waldman
  • Writers Guild Strike

Dad leads the communications efforts for one of his longtime clients, the Writers Guild of America - East -- through a successful strike against CBS.

  • Dad Retires

Dad retires. He'd built a great business with mom -- Communication Planners, Inc. -- that did good work and paid for a nice suburban life and expensive colleges. His clients included: Barneys, the New York State Humphrey Muskie campaign, the Writers Guild of America East, Interstate Cigar Company, Masters, the Nassau County Medical Society, County Executive Eugene Nickerson, Co-Op City, the Great Neck Public Library, Vision Cable, and Local 340 of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile union.
    Steven Waldman
here are some more examples of their great work
  • Graduations, plays and family events galore!

In retirement, they spend their time yelling at the television set, copy editing the boys' projects -- and going to many wonderful events with the grandkids.
    Lauren Zalaznick
I said it before (I think around the 1977 post) and I'll say it again-- to this day, I love seeing Sandy and Marty!! And I don't mind seeing that kid Steve that much, either. Love, Lauren Z.
  • Josh, Gordon, Susannah, Ben, Joe (back row), Sandy and Marty

    59th Wedding Anniversary!!!

59 years. Amazing. That's like more years than I've been alive even. You continue to inspire us -- even as you become (according to New York cities pedestrians) "cute" and "adorable."
