Michael Alan Smith was such a good and smart and generous and scrupulous man.

The original purveyor of dad jokes, the hardest person ever to buy a present for, someone who never yelled ("I'm being emphatic"), the slowest walker of all time, a pioneering hate-watcher of cable news, a loyal New York Giants fan through thick and mostly thin, a doting grandfather, a loving father, and a devoted husband of nearly 55 years. 

Among the many things I admired about him: He knew who he was and who he wasn't. We should all be so lucky.
