LifeStory

Bryan Ortiz

I sadly attempted suicide twice in my life (9 and 25 years old). At both times in my life I felt alone, like I didn't belong and that I was a failure. I also grew up in one of the worst neighborhoods in Brooklyn where I was told constantly I wouldn't make it in life. After my 2nd attempt I realized that I must truly have a purpose in life. I'm still battling PTSD, ADHD and Depression but I've learned to manage it thanks to social support, working out and therapy. Some days are more difficult than others but when I do have moments that I'm feeling down I give myself permission to feel that way and I reach out to my fiance and friends for social support. I also journal every morning for 5 mins. During that time I start off with 2 things I'm grateful for, 1 thing I'm looking forward to and 2 things that will help me achieve my goals. I also find helping others even just checking in to see how they are doing brings me joy because I know I'm making a difference in their life.
I'm currently 31 years old and a senior at Temple University studying Public Health. I also have a full time job which gives a chance to use fitness to help improve peoples overall mental health (including by telling them my story and that if I can get through this they can as well!)
