Judge John P. Lavelle, the retired president judge of Carbon County, Pennsylvania, a pioneer of computerized case management, and a historian of the justice system in the state's coal region, who presided over a precedent-shattering libel trial against The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1990, died Friday, Oct. 20 at his home in Lehighton, Pa., surrounded by loving family. He was 86.
