LifeStory

Keith Wayne Vanloo

By Nyla Rock-Vanloo

My father, Keith Wayne Vanloo transitioned on Monday March 5th. Although we are made heartsick by his passing, we honor his life.

Keith immigrated to New York from Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago at the age of twelve and reunited with his family in Brooklyn, New York, later moving to Queens as a teenager.

His enthusiasm for music, world history, and culture informed his unique orientation to the world and encouraged a life of curiosity. These passions led to his work in food and fine art. After an early life of entrepreneurship, establishing Brooklyn institutions that remain today, including Scoops Ice Cream Parlor on Flatbush Avenue. He later worked with great dedication as an art installer at the Brooklyn Museum of Art for 12 years and was beloved by all of his colleagues.

My father's extraordinary worldview also led to many deep and meaningful relationships with people from all walks of life. His compassion for others ensured that these friendships would last a lifetime.

I am sorry to hear about the passing of Keith. He and I worked together at the Museum for many years. He was always so kind to me. Sometimes during the morning break I would come down and get a coffee and if he was in front of me in line, he would treat me to my breakfast. I'll never forget this kindness. My condolences to his family and friends.

I have located and posted several photographs of Keith from his Brooklyn Museum years. There are three photographs that date from Jim Hayes' retirement; the Art Handlers - Jann, Vital, Smrtic, Andersons, Gentile, Vanloo & Komorowski; Walter, Jim and Keith, and Keith with Walter. There are 2 photos from Insoo Chun's farewell day- Insoo with Keith; Keith with the Registrars Welty & Flynn. And from the send-off for Jason Grunwald, Michael Allen and Keith are seen together.
