Calvin Carver

Calvin Reeve Carver died peacefully on March 20, 2018. He was born in 1925 in East Orange and lived in Maplewood from 1930 until 1961 when he moved to Short Hills. He also had a vacation home in Pomfret, Vermont for more than 40 years, where he enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and forest management.


Mr. Carver was married to Emma Gilbert of Maplewood from 1951 until she died in 1977. In 1982, he married June Ferguson of Short Hills. He is survived by his wife, June, two children, Marcey Carver of Bradford, VT and Chip Carver (Anne DeLaney) of Mendham as well as three step-daughters, Julie Ferguson Snell (John) of Charlottesville, VA; Jane Ferguson Scurti (James) of Tarpon Springs, FL and Jill Ferguson DiNola (Marc) of Cumberland, MD; five grandchildren and thirteen step-grandchildren. A son, Gibb Carver died in 2008.


He graduated from Cornell University, with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He served in the Navy from 1943 until 1947 and in the Organized Naval Reserve from 1947 until 1950. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, and served until 1952. While assigned to the USS General George M. Randall (AP-115) and the USS Taconic (AGC-17), as a deck officer, he saw duty in the Pacific, Atlantic, Caribbean and Arctic Oceans. He was discharged as a Lieutenant, Senior Grade.


From 1947 until 1950, he was employed in the Newark office of Public Service Electric and Gas Company. From 1952 until 1986, he was employed by NUI Corporation, a public utility holding company, and its predecessors, Elizabethtown Gas Company, City Gas Company of New Jersey, City Gas Company of Phillipsburg, NJ and City Gas Company of Newton, NJ. At the time of his retirement in 1987, he was Executive Vice President of NUI and President of numerous subsidiary companies including National Exploration Company, one of the predecessors of Petrohawk Energy Company. Prior to 1965, he was President of the various City Gas companies and the Syracuse Suburban Gas Company of East Syracuse, NY. From the 1960’s until 2006 he was also President of Penn-Jersey Pipe Line Co. He had served as President of the New Jersey Gas Association and was a member of the Society of Gas Lighting and Eta Kappa Nu Association (the Electrical Engineering Honorary Society).


Mr. Carver was a Director of NUI Corporation from the time of its organization in 1969 until his retirement from the Board in 1999. He was also a Director of Elizabethtown Gas Company from 1965 until he retired in 1999.


Mr. Carver was an active member of Community Congregational Church in Short Hills having served as Church Chairman, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, a Deacon, member of the Church Board, and for many years, Assistant Treasurer and a member of the Investment Committee.


Mr. Carver had been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Millburn Township Beautification League for six years serving as Secretary for two years and Treasurer for four. He was also a member of the Short Hills Club and had served on the Board of Governors for six years including two years as Assistant Treasurer and four years as Treasurer. In 2007, he was honored by the Club with the presentation of the Outstanding Service Award. Mr. Carver was a member of the Old Guard of Summit.


At the age of 78, Mr. Carver was granted two patents by the United States Patent Office. They involved the revitalization of abandoned railroad tunnels for natural gas storage.


A service will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Short Hills Community Congregational Church, 200 Hartshorn Drive, Short Hills, NJ. A gathering will follow, at The Short Hills Club, 9 Lake Shore Drive, Short Hills, NJ.
