Carlton Allen

Carlton William “Bim” Allen, born October 29, 1928, in Glendale, CA, went home to be with his Lord Jesus on December 15, 2017, in Madison, NJ.

Bim was a man whose fascination with and love for people characterized his entire life. From his early years in Lynn, MA, with older brother Sheldon and sister Betty, to his later years as a father of four children and grandfather to ten grandchildren, Bim spent his days as a mentor, a trusted friend, and a caring disciple of Jesus.

A graduate of Lynn English High School, Bim entered the army for two years. He graduated in 1952 from the University of New Hampshire, where he played tennis, lacrosse, and ran cross-country, in addition to being class president. After college, he was recruited by AT&T, where he worked for 35 years, often forsaking corporate success to spend more time with his family.

In 1956, Bim married Ernestine Grace “Tuni” Allen in Boston, MA. Motivated by his faith, Bim focused his time and energy on loving everyone he met, no matter their age, position, gender, or race. No one who met Bim could ever forget him, and he never forgot anyone he met. He lived out daily the sacrificial love of Jesus.

At both Bethlehem Community Church in Delmar, NY, and Long Hill Chapel in Chatham, NJ, he served as an elder and on many committees and sang in the choir. A lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and the New York Giants, Bim served as referee for college and high school soccer and lacrosse into his late seventies. He enjoyed writing articles for newspapers like the Madison Eagle and the Kean College news publication and wrote poetry for events and friends. He also served on the Madison Recreation Committee.

Bim is survived by Tuni, his beloved wife of 61 years; his four children, Scott of Kansas City, MO; Matthew of Woodland Park, CO; Kimberly of Morristown, NJ; and Peter of Mill Valley, CA; daughters-in-law Debbie Ann, Debbie, and Heather; and his ten grandchildren: Keith, Steven, Katie, Emily (and husband Josh Denning), Daniel, Elizabeth, Jonathan, John, Shae, and Tate.

Bim is also survived by his brother Sheldon Allen of Lee, MA; sister Betty Nuccio (predeceased); sisters-in-law Joan Rosario of Morris Plains, NJ, and Mary Ann Edwards of North Easton, MA; and many nieces and nephews, along with beloved friends. A celebration of Bim’s life will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Long Hill Chapel, 525 Shunpike Road, Chatham, NJ 07928.
