LifeStory

Dorothy Akers

Dottie was born on December 11, 1926 in Short Hills, New Jersey. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William H. and Florence M. (nee Bond) Parsil. She was the last living Parsil in Short Hills and a descendant of Nicholas and Thomas Parsil who fought in the Revolutionary War. After marrying, Dottie resided briefly in Iowa but lived the majority of her adult life in the Parsil family home on White Oak Ridge Road not far from the colonial era cemetery where many of her ancestors are interred. When she could no longer live independently, Dottie profoundly missed her childhood home.

She was a graduate of Millburn High School. After raising three children, she worked as a News Transcriber for Burrelle’s Press Clipping, Livingston until retirement in 1993.

In her spare time, she loved solving crossword puzzles and other word games. When she was younger, she was a member of several bowling leagues with her husband, Joseph. She enjoyed researching and talking about family history. Dottie was always pleased to welcome family to her home and reminisce about her childhood, her friends, and extended family. She had a keen recollection of life in Short Hills before modern development erased its rural roots. Dottie loved all animals and had many pets over the years. She was particularly fond of her many cats and supported the ASPCA. Dottie’s happiest times were spent in the company of her dear sister Elsie during the numerous family trips they took to the Jersey shore.

At the time of her passing, Dottie was a resident of Little Brook Nursing Home in Califon, NJ. She and her family sincerely thank the staff for the attentive and compassionate care they provided.

Dottie was predeceased by her beloved husband Joseph P. Akers in 1986. She was the loving mother of Jeffrey Akers and wife Christa, Patricia Trube and husband William and Joseph Akers and wife Mary and cherished grandmother of Michael Akers, Erik Trube and 5 great-grandchildren. In addition, she was predeceased by her sister, Elsie Schroeder and brother-in-law, Roy Schroeder, and grandson, Jimmy Akers.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2018 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Bradley, Smith & Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Avenue, Springfield, NJ 07081. Words of Remembrance will begin at 11:00 in the funeral home. An interment will follow at the First Presbyterian of Springfield Church Cemetery, Springfield, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ASPCA.
