LifeStory

Julio Cesar Perez

Loved deeply by so many

By Hannah Perez-Postman

Julio Cesar Perez died on Sunday, October 7, 2018, at 6:46 a.m. from cardiac arrest. He was 60. He is survived by his mother, Francisca Torres, his sister Mercedes Abreu, his daughter Hannah Teresa Perez-Postman, and countless other dear family and friends

Born in the Dominican Republic in 1957, he moved to New York when he was 10 and made lifelong friends who became family.  He was totally blind from the age of 13 and his relationship with his disability shaped so much of his beautiful life journey. His sincerity and wonderful sense of humor brought joy to all who knew him.

In his gentle, wise, and compassionate way he moved people to question the assumptions made about "the other"--whether that other was defined by race, ability, gender, or differing viewpoint. He listened to all those who crossed paths with him with a full heart and a clear mind, making people feel seen and heard to depths that are rare.

His work for many years was as an adaptive technology specialist, supporting other blind people to live full, autonomous lives with their disabilities.

A lover of the earth and justice;  a disciple of spirit and his ancestors; a mentor, brother, and friend to many. He is missed and will always be loved.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing in Julio's name to the National Federation for the Blind, the ACLU, or Planned Parenthood. There will also be a basket available at the memorial for in-person donations to R.E.A.L Teaneck, a local Latinx cultural organization where Julio was a contributing member.

Though it saddens me to write this, I am so grateful for all of the fun moments we shared. You always made me laugh and your positive energy and inviting presence never failed to make everyone feel comfortable. When I think of you I can see you laughing, dancing around the house and living your life to the fullest and that is how I'll always remember you. You were truly a light and one of the few people I've encountered who really lived a colorful and full life. You've inspired me in more ways than one and until we meet again all I can say is rest in love. Thank you for sharing your vibrant spirit with us. Love you Uncle Julio! 💙

Love,
Jennice 💖

Uncle Julio thanks for all the good times my fondest memory of you is you were swimming in the resort pool at 4am after Jennice’s sweet sixteen. I said “Julio what are you doing its 4am” and you said “Its always day time for me so its always a perfect time for a swim” I didnt even think twice and just jumped in the pool.. Ill never forget all the conversations we had on my deck about everything. You tought me that you cant live your life with limits you surprised me with stories of the things you did with your life so many times. You will always be a true inspiration to me thanks for everything see you on the other side Julio.... drinks on me next time I see you. I love you uncle Julio see you on the other side
