Some of you will be remembering my mother from her life before I was born and some of you may be remembering Mom from after I left, I choose to remember the mother from my memories. I choose to remember the mother whose loving face, full of concern, was the first I saw cradling me close as I came out of a grand mal seizure. I choose to remember the mother who would warn me to be very quiet and watch closely as she took us for a nature walk, because you never knew when you were being watched by fairies. I choose to remember the mother who would dramatically read to us using a different voice for each character. I choose to remember the mother who soothed me as I struggled terrified to free myself from my night terrors. I choose to remember the mother who would chase us around with a dish towel on her head pretending to be the witch who wanted a “sweet child to pop in the oven.” I choose to remember the mother who would wake us up and tell us to put on our bathing suits under our school clothes. All day I would anticipate the last bell when Mom would pick us up in the convertible and take us to the beach. I choose to remember the mother who would make my Dad laugh. I choose to remember the mother who looked just like Cinderella next to Prince Charming as she and Dad went to a military ball. I choose to remember the mother who would roll my hair in socks because I longed to have curly hair. I choose to remember jam making, teaching my brother to fight, decorating fruitcakes, Jack Lalanne, cattails, singing in the car. I choose to remember Mom storming into the school to confront my teacher or, once, the principal. I choose to remember the matching dresses she made so I could be a mini mom. I choose to remember her calling for my Dad to catch the crab that got loose. I choose to remember her vowing to be the best mother ever. I choose to remember the good things, because those are the experiences I tried to give my children.
