Lynne S. Crow


Lynne S. Crow née Smith, 76, of Short Hills, NJ died on January 8, 2019 while out enjoying her evening walk.

Lynne is survived by her son William D. Crow III, his wife Marina and their two daughters Madeleine and Evelyn; her son Alexander F. Crow; and her daughter Margaret C. Rogers, her husband Alistair and their daughter Campbell and son Cooper. She is also survived by the father of their three children William D. Crow II and her three siblings, Nancy S. Whelan, Barbara S. Young, and David C. Smith; as well as beloved nieces, nephews, and their children.

Lynne was born on October 13th, 1942 in Buffalo, New York to Stephen and Jean Ruggles Smith and moved to Worcester, Massachusetts in 1949. Lynne is an alumna of the Emma Willard preparatory school in Troy, New York. Lynne earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia in 1964. After a move to New York City in 1965 she worked as a claims adjuster for Liberty Mutual as well as in publishing with McGraw Hill. In April 1966 she married. Then in 1969 she moved to Short Hills and started a family a year later. Returning to work in 1981 she established a successful career in financial planning with Guardian Life agencies. Lynne worked tirelessly to earn professional qualifications such as her CLU, ChFC, CLTC degrees. Her compassion, intelligence, and personable demeanor lead her to excel in the industry. Her hard work, drive and ambition was honored and recognized many times through numerous articles and biographies. Lynne was a Lifetime Member of the prestigious Million Dollar Round Table through which she volunteered her time for fundraising and their Habitat for Humanity’s outreach program. Semi-retiring in 2007, Lynne continued helping clients through Guardian's Certified Financial Services agency in Paramus, NJ.

Lynne’s passions include animals, photography, and travel, evidenced by the walls and albums full of photos from the dozens of countries she visited over several decades. She was also devoted to her family, friends and the Short Hills community. A giving person, Lynne was was an active member of the Christ Church community - involved with the Saturday Book Group, Martha & Mary, the Interfaith Bible Study and the Lunch Bunch. She was a tireless volunteer for their rummage sale as well as the Interfaith Food Pantry of the Oranges and attended church social events regularly. Most recently, she assisted with Church of Epiphany's Thanksgiving Feast and the annual Christ Church Christmas Pageant. She was a passionate and active Alumna of Sweet Briar College and was a sustaining member of The Junior League of Short Hills.

She will be remembered for her compassion, quiet generosity, her dry sense of humor, and her love of nature, travel, gadgets and factoids. 

The funeral service will take place at 1pm Wednesday 23rd January at Christ Church of Short Hills, 66 Highland Ave, Short Hills, NJ 07078. In lieu of flowers or gifts, contributions to one of Lynne’s favorite causes would be appreciated; Sweet Briar College, National Audubon Society, Sierra Club, and Christ Church of Short Hills.
