Theresa Maria Mooney

Theresa Maria Mooney, 68, died Monday, 24 amazing years after her initial cancer diagnosis. True to her New York roots in The Bronx, she fought off a brain tumor with grace, strength and optimism every day. Terri was an inspiration and a peaceful presence in any room she entered. A woman of tremendous faith, her warmth and powerful prayers brought comfort and confidence to everyone who knew her.

For 44 years, Terri was married to her best friend and the love of her life, John P. Mooney. Nothing made her happier than to have him by her side. Family was always her No. 1 priority. She devoted herself wholeheartedly to her children, Patrick and Maureen, as they grew up in Chatham. She was thrilled to see them happily married, welcoming their spouses, Margaux and Jonathan, into her family with open arms. Eventually known as “Nana” to her four beautiful grandchildren, Terri beamed with pride whenever she held them or watched Jack, Mary, Millie and Matthew play together.

Terri is survived by her sisters, who kept her singing and smiling to the end: Liz Powell and her husband Ralph; MaryAnna McMahon and her husband James; her sister-in-law Frances Duignan; as well as many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother Bill Duignan, who always made her laugh, and her parents William and Elizabeth (Flaherty) Duignan.

A proud New Yorker, Terri was born and raised in the Parkchester section of The Bronx, where she loved to swim at the Turner Club and was an active member of St. Raymond’s parish. Terri graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School in 1968 and earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Marymount Manhattan College. She worked at Elizabeth Arden in Manhattan as a customer service manager before moving to Stuyvesant Town to start her family. In 1986, they moved to Chatham, where Terri became a 30-year active member of the Madison YMCA, and involved with St. Patrick and Corpus Christi, places that meant so much to her unbelievable fighting spirit.

We look forward to celebrating her life at St. Patrick Church (85 Washington Ave.on Friday at 10:30 am. Friends are invited to visit at Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home (345 Main St.on Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9pm.  Donations in Terri’s memory may be made to the Mary and Patrick Mooney Scholarship Fund, c/o Sister Mary Elizabeth Mooney, O.P., 1144 Hoe Ave., Bronx, NY 10459.
