From Dad's Memorial Service Program:
Born on May 1, 1932 in Johnson County, MO, Jack grew up in and around Holden, MO and entered the U.S. Navy right after high school. He loved telling about his time in the Arctic on the ice breaker, U.S.S. Burton Island, and served as a Petty Officer specializing in fire control and missile guidance. Shortly after leaving the service, he met Shirley while she was still in college. They were married on August 7, 1960, in Warrensburg, MO, and settled into family life.
Jack was determined to provide for his family and did whatever was necessary to build a comfortable life for his wife and kids. If that meant baling hay or fixing farm equipment, he did it from daylight until dusk without complaint. He also continued to pursue his education in electronics which led to a career in the defense industry, working mostly in Aeronautics and Missile Guidance. Highly respected by his colleagues for his practical knowledge and knack for problem-solving, he also developed strong personal relationships with anyone he knew.
Son, Jeffrey, and daughter, Jeanne were added to the family in 1962 and 1966 respectively. Jack was quiet, but strong and led by example far more than words. In a world filled with questionable role models, Jack’s children never had to look further than their living room to understand where a strong faith and a big heart could take them. Jack’s caring nature extended to everyone in his life. That could mean family, colleagues, friends, or even strangers along the side of the road. His intelligence, compassion, and humor were his greatest assets and he was loved by most anyone whose path he crossed.
While we will miss having him at our elbow daily, we know he lives on in the presence of the Lord and in our hearts and minds. His influence over us and everyone else around him shaped and molded our lives forever, and we’re better for it.
