Over the years, our basement has happily hosted many of our 3 sons’ friends. As the parents, we got to know the kids and saw them having fun gaming or watching a movie, or in recent years, playing beer pong and hanging out together. Each of our sons have their crew of buddies and over the years we been privileged to watch them grow up. From the first time Justin came to our home, I knew he was somehow something special. He was always engaging and encouraging me to joining in with the boys. His sense of humor and warm disposition made it almost impossible not to love the kid. His unfailing charm and warm heart made us look forward to seeing him and hearing how he was doing.
A couple of years ago I learned that my college fraternity had lost the tradition of playing whales tales, a game that was ubiquitous for as long as anyone could remember. So I taught the boys how to play. It was a lot of fun and the boys caught on quickly. Justin entertained us all with his antics. He was a bright and talented guy, but something about the game eluded him that night. It was hilarious watching him try to figure out which way the game was going. After that, the boys would invite me to join them and play some whales tales. It wasn’t long before Justin got to be one of the best!
To me its not how long a person lives; it is what they do in life that matters. Justin left us much too soon. He is a good soul and a fine young man with a big heart. He was the kind of kid that I would be proud to have as a son. I will miss his warm smile and easy laugh. I don’t know where Justin is now, but I do know that it will be a better, happier place for having him! My mother used to say: ‘Be happy that it happened, not sad that its over’…
Godspeed Justin!

I remember taking my son Nick and Justin to the JCC pool and watching them play in the baby pool. Justin jumped in with abandon and gusto, displaying then his ability and passion for sports. In my mind, he will always be a 3 year old boy flying - all muscles and blond hair - through the air into the baby pool.
