  • Red Dutton is Born

    Russell
    Canada
Red Dutton's given name was Norman Alexander Dutton, but that name didn't stick. A family friend of the Duttons refused to call him Norman because it had a negative connotation for her, so she instead called him "Mervyn." His friends called him "Red" after the color of his hair. To most, he was known as Mervyn "Red" Dutton.

Red's father, Bill, was a successful contractor who helped build Canada's transcontinental railway system. Red often helped his father at his work when he was a boy. He had at least two elder brothers, and a sister.
  • WW1 - Battle of Vimy Ridge

Dutton fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917 and was hit by shrapnel in his leg. Doctors pressed to amputate his leg. Dutton refused, realizing he would never enjoy hockey and sports again. He returned to Canada and spent the following 18 months working to recover full use of his leg.

  • Dutton Changes the Team's Name to the BROOKLYN Americans

Dutton not only changes the team's name to the Brooklyn Americans, but he moves there as well, renting an apartment with his wife in Park Slope. Dutton also insists that all of the single players move to Brooklyn, too, better to keep them on the straight and narrow.
